“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” -1984, George Orwell
The quote above is from 1984, a dystopian novel written in 1949. You’ve probably heard many quotes and comparisons thrown around due to YouTube completely deleting accounts, Twitter “shadowbanning” & suspending conservatives, or the Confederate monuments being taken down and wanting to be forgotten, 1984 is slowly becoming a reality. But, I am not here to talk about 1984, I’m here to answer one big question. Is history being erased?
Over the course of the last couple of years, headlines with the words “Confederate statue” and “protest” are in the news a lot. One of the top items on the liberal agenda is removing Confederate statues. Why do they want to remove Confederate statues? They say it displays white supremacy. The New York Times wrote an article with polls asking each viewer to say yes or no to if certain statue should be taken down. The numbers are staggering with over 36,000 votes wanting to remove these statues. I wonder, what good would the removal of statues do?
On August 20th, 2018, a confederate statue was taken down by protests. “Silent Sam” was toppled down by protesters due to its “enduring tribute to white supremacy.” In another article from the New York Times, an alumna named Jasmin Howard described what it was like after the event. ““It was all smiles and joy and dancing and jubilation, to be honest,” she said to the New York Times. Why was the statue built in the first place? The statue was put up on the campus of North Carolina in 1913 to honor the students from that University who fought in the civil war. Two hundred and eighty-seven of those students who fought in the war died. The United Daughters of the Confederacy had the idea to erect this statue to honor the soldiers.
Over 30 cities have relocated or completely removed confederate monuments.
See the issue here?
History is not only being taken down, history is becoming forgotten. Let me make this clear, I do not at all support these confederate generals and what they have stood for. I strongly stand against slavery and racism. But, we must learn from history so it does not repeat.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana
That’s the glory of American history, through all of the wrongdoings we have grown from that. America has a whole lot of room to grow and sadly I think it will become progressively worse as the liberal agenda has become bigger and has effected almost everything.
Not only do certain events like this reveal the massive amount of ignorance in the liberal agenda but they reveal a double standard. There are Vladimir Lenin statues here in America. I don’t understand, where is the outrage? Plain and simple. Just like Donald Trump’s Hollywood star being vandalized constantly, Kevin Spacey’s star hasn’t been brought to light. At least not to liberals.
The statues are just the start of something bigger we can imagine. Not only are monuments of historical figures are being taken down but numerous amounts of conservatives are being censored. (Gavin McInnes, The ALX, and Tommy Robinson are some of the big ones.)
Something is telling me that the debate on these statues will not go away anytime soon. So, what is next? Stay safe and be vigilant.
